You may be suprised to learn that succulents can thrive with no soil at all. Once cut off its main stem a film will form as it naturally prepares itself to re-root. During this process lower leaves may shrivel because the plant is living off of stored energy. This is normal. You may also lose a few leaves, which is also normal.

Place your succulent in an area that will allow it to receive filtered or direct light.

Water only every 5-7 days. A spray bottle is the simplest way to do so.

Never allow succulents to stand in water.
